Man Charged With Slugging Elderly Airport Worker Ordered To Stay Away From Logan

BOSTON (CBS) – A man from Carlisle has been ordered to stay away from Logan Airport after police say he smashed his large backpack into the face of an elderly female security worker.

Eric Brandhorst, 53, was charged with assault and battery Tuesday morning after State Police said he knocked the 74-year-old woman to the ground after she informed him that his bag was too big to take onto his flight.

According to the police report, Trooper Dana Cresta was about ten feet away at the time and witnessed the incident at the United Airlines entrance to the TSA checkpoint in Terminal B.

"The Defendant used two hands to swing his back pack from his right shoulder, deliberately striking the victim, sending her to the floor, while He attempted to briskly walk away from the area," Cresta said in the report.

The trooper tracked down Brandhorst, brought him to the floor, subdued him and arrested him.

The victim, whose name was not released, had bruises around her left eye and the left side of her face. She also said there was pain in her hip, knee, and shoulder caused by her hitting the floor.

She was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for further examination.

According to the police report, Brandhorst "did not comment on the condition of the victim" and said "I was aggravated and made a mistake."

He was arraigned Tuesday in East Boston Municipal Court on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person age 60 or older. He was released on a promise to return to court February 3 with orders to stay away from Logan Airport.

Brandhorst, who police say is approximately 6-feet tall and weighs 200-pounds, was heading to Jackson Hole, Wyoming before the incident.
