Park Rangers Honored For Bravery After Boston Common Attack
BOSTON (CBS) – Two park rangers stabbed on Boston Common were honored Monday night. The rangers were attacked in October, allegedly by a man they were trying to stop from smoking.
Sgt. Albert Hurd nearly died after the attack. He and his partner, Ranger James Lunnin, were both stabbed but survived thanks to quick work by witnesses and EMS workers.
"The circumstances speak for themselves," Hurd said. "We both actually faced some severe injuries, life threatening injuries."
"Something like this doesn't usually happen," Lunnin said. "We're usually able to deescalate before it gets to a situation like that. But that was just a situation that I feel like no matter what it was going to go the way it did."
Also honored at the ceremony were Boston Police officers who responded to the scene and four civilians who literally took the shirts off their back and stopped the bleeding.
"I actually thought I had a rag in my backpack and I didn't so I just used my shirt," said Madison Sloan who helped the rangers. "It's good to see them walking around again."
The man who police say stabbed the two park rangers was arrested a short time later. He has been held on one million dollars bail and is facing charges which include attempted murder.
