Cianci Loses To Elorza In Providence Mayor's Race

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Providence mayor and two-time felon Buddy Cianci has lost his comeback bid to Democrat Jorge Elorza.

Elorza defeated the independent Cianci and Republican Daniel Harrop on Tuesday.

Cianci was first elected mayor in 1974. He was driven from office twice: in 1984 after pleading no contest to assault and, after a comeback, in 2002 for corruption. He served 4½ years in prison.

Top Democrats rallied around Elorza, including President Barack Obama, who made a rare endorsement in a mayor's race. Even the Republican Harrop voted for Elorza instead of himself.

The 37-year-old Elorza is a law professor and former housing court judge who worked his way up from poverty.

Elorza succeeds one-term Mayor Angel Taveras, who ran unsuccessfully for governor.
