Three Corrections Employees Fired For Bridgewater State Hospital Death

BRIDGEWATER (CBS) – Three Department of Correction employees were fired this week after the investigation into the death of a Bridgewater State Hospital patient.

The Department of Correction confirmed on Saturday that the correction officers and supervisor were fired on Thursday, related to the death of Joshua Messier, a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic who died while being restrained in an incident caught on video.

Messier died in 2009, and DOC officials said on Saturday that the "investigation and subsequent disciplinary hearings revealed that these individuals' actions violated DOC policy."

As a result of the investigation, DOC officials said they plan to make revisions to policies, staff training, increased clinical staff and strategic collaboration with the Department of Mental Health.

"We also recognize and appreciate the hard work of the nearly 6,000 Commonwealth employees dedicated to building on the Department of Correction's achievements by implementing these important changes," the DOC said in a statement.
