Phantom Gourmet: The Spot In Norwood

NORWOOD - The Spot in Norwood is the kind of place that's difficult to categorize. It's a bagel bakery, a sandwich shop, a convenience store, a candy shop. It's kind of all things to all people.

Bagels are what put The Spot on the map, because the owner, Perry, has been baking authentic New York style bagels his entire life.

"We got plain. We got sesame. We got raisin, everything, poppyseed, egg, marble, multi-grain, garlic, salt," Perry listed.

Airy and light on the inside, nice crust on the outside. Perfect for a bagel sandwich.

Bagel egg sandwiches are the number one seller at the Spot. You can get a BLT with a fried egg; the garden veggie is really good. But the one you have to get is known as the Beast: thick slices of spicy Italian sausage, farmer's cut bacon, honey baked ham, some fluffy scrambled eggs, American cheese, all served on a cinnamon sugar bagel.

They make bagels the old fashioned way, but they have bagel flavors that are definitely new school. Take for example the Fluffernutter bagel, which is a toasted chocolate chip bagel, topped with homemade fresh-ground peanut butter, Fluff and Nutella. It tastes as good as it sounds.

The bagels are really good and really affordable. In fact every day after 3 o'clock, you can get three fresh out of the oven bagels, for just a dollar. Every Tuesday is 'Customer Appreciation Day',' when bagels are free until 11am.

Everything at The Spot is kind of a surprise. The signature 'Spot Dog' is a split hot dog on a toasted bun, with peanut butter, jelly, and cream cheese on top.

The Spot has what must be the biggest soda selection in New England. More than 100 small batch, gourmet, hard to find sodas from all over the country, all made with real cane syrup in all kinds of exotic flavors: sarsaparilla, limeade, orangeade.

There is a cola called 'Spiffy' and lemon soda called 'Lemmy.' For all you Harry Potter fans, there is Flying Cauldron Butterscotch Beer. Why have a creamsicle for dessert when you can have an orange cream Americana soda with your lunch?

You want something really refreshing? They make all kinds of icy beverages right in front of your eyes, from old school Slush Puppies to frozen Del's Lemonade. There is even an old-fashioned soda fountain where you can pour some root bear or black cherry soda into your ice cream float.

It's The Spot you come for breakfast. It's The Spot you come for a cold drink. It's The Spot to just hang out with your friends. It's The Spot, at 20 Broadway in Norwood.

Watch Phantom Gourmet on Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30 and 11 a.m. on myTV38.
