Daily Talker: Do Fines For Unsecured Cargo Need To Be Increased?

The driver of a landscaping truck got a $200 ticket after an ax flew off his truck and crashed through the windshield of another car on I-95 in Topsfield Monday morning.

A retired couple from Rhode Island was not hurt. The ax head came to rest on the dashboard right on front of the female passenger, spraying her with glass.

The ax "struck the road surface, bounced, spun through the air and went through the windshield," said Trooper Joseph Risteen with the Massachusetts State Police. "It was right at eye level with this one. So if this axe had penetrated through further and hit her, she would have been injured or killed."

The couple and the driver of the truck both pulled over. State Police cited the driver for failing to secure cargo.

Is $200 a large enough fine in this case? Should lawmakers increase the fines for unsecured cargo on vehicles? Share your comments below, and watch for them on WBZ News in the Morning from 4:30 to 7:00 a.m.
