Hamilton Church Group Attacked In Guatemala

HAMILTON (CBS) - A church group from Hamilton is back home after they were attacked in Guatemala.

Seventeen people, including teenagers, from The First Congregational Church of Hamilton went to the country for about a week. On their way to Guatemala City to return home on Tuesday one of their vans was carjacked.

Senior Pastor Dorington Little said the members were assaulted and robbed. He would not reveal the extent of the assaults. Little said when the attackers left, the group was able to drive the van to safety. He said those in the van were checked out at the hospital in Guatemala.

According to Little, the first van was too far ahead of the second van to realize something had gone wrong.

The group was able to take their scheduled flight back to the U.S. and arrived on Wednesday.

The church worked with the organization Partners in Development to make the mission trip possible. The organization did not return calls for a comment.

Little said the church has done mission trips before, but this one is the first to Guatemala. He said he did not know what if any security precautions had been taken.

The church is holding a special service on Sunday for the victims.
