Remy Decision To Plead Guilty Surprises Legal Experts

BOSTON (CBS) – Jared Remy's guilty plea in the murder of his girlfriend Jennifer Martel came as a surprise to many experts following the case.

WBZ-TV legal analyst Harry Manion said a guilty plea in a first-degree murder case is highly unusual but this turn of events was particularly unexpected given what he's observed of Remy's behavior in the case.

"It's just a dramatic change of character and approach," Manion said.

Experts See Personal Motive Not Legal Move Behind Remy Guilty Plea

"To go in and knowingly, and voluntarily, plead guilty to murder one, accepting the consequences of natural life without parole, sparing the commonwealth, and most importantly the Martel family the pain and trauma of a murder one trial this fall, is laudable," he remarked.

"I haven't seen anything in Jared Remy's past to cause me to use the word laudable to any of his activities," Manion said.
