Authorities Investigating Lowell Woman's Unexplained Death

LOWELL (CBS) --- Police are investigating the death of a 52-year-old woman.

Police responded to a call for medical assistance at the home of Elaine Sweeney in the city's Pawtucketville neighborhood at about 2 a.m. Sunday.

Sweeney was pronounced dead at the scene. There's no word on what caused her death.

Her family says her husband, Andrew Sweeney, found her dead in the hallway early Easter morning.

Tuesday, the woman's father spoke to reporters.

"She was a lovely daughter, she did everything for her kids that anyone could possibly do," Rene Turcotte said. "She loved her family."

Sweeney was married with four children from a previous marriage.

Lowell police and the Middlesex District Attorney's office are investigating. An autopsy has been completed but a cause of death has not yet been released. A toxicology report is underway but the results could take several weeks.

Elaine Sweeney's body was found just four days before her husband was due back in court where he was set to change his plea in connection with a bad car accident two years ago.

That crash sent Elaine Sweeney to the hospital for several days. Andrew Sweeney ended up charged with assault and battery. That change of plea hearing has been postponed until May.
