Report: WR Brandon LaFell Visiting With Patriots

BOSTON (CBS) -- With Julian Edelman testing the market, the Patriots are starting to weigh other options.

According to Adam Schefter, free agent wide receiver Brandon LaFell will visit with the Patriots on Wednesday.

LaFell, 27, played his first four NFL seasons with the Carolina Panthers, steadily producing with an average of 42 receptions and 596 receiving yards per season. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound receiver has caught 13 career touchdowns, with five of them coming last season.

The former LSU Tiger caught 11 touchdowns in his senior season in college, and he was drafted in the third round of the 2010 draft.

The Panthers reportedly prioritized re-signing Ted Ginn over LaFell this offseason. The Charlotte Observer's Jonathan Jones estimated that LaFell should draw roughly $1 million per year in his next deal.

"Here's why: LaFell did little to separate himself as a top receiver in the NFL during his four years, and as his production tapered off with more responsibility, he showed he may be better suited as a No. 3," Jones wrote. "The market will soon be saturated with wide receivers just like LaFell. Jason Avant, Lance Moore and Sidney Rice are just three players who have similar numbers to LaFell and could offer equal or greater production at the same price."
