Pedestrians Warned Of Falling Ice In Boston

QUINCY (CBS) - Chris Arnold woke up Friday morning to a Valentine's Day gift from Mother Nature. His car window was shattered by falling ice.

"A lady next door pointed it out to me, you might want to check out your car," he said.

The chunk of ice is still frozen inside the rear window. He believes it came from the roof. Large icicles had formed there in the past weeks.

"It doesn't fall straight down. That's the trick. You'd think it would, but it doesn't."

Ice damaged another car in Chelsea over the weekend.

The problem is on full display on homes and buildings throughout the Boston area. Icicles poised like daggers from gutters and overhangs.

In Downtown Boston signs outside buildings warn pedestrians of the danger above.

"There's signs by hotels and stuff, saying falling ice and stuff and then you look up and there are huge icicles," said a woman walking through Back Bay.

Another passerby said she looks up regularly. "I pay attention, hoping not to get impaled by a falling icicle."

Experts say it's important to check your roof. Icicles can be dangerous. They can also be a sign of bigger problems like ice dams.
