Shrewsbury Gas Main Fire Destroys Backhoe; No One Hurt

SHREWSBURY (CBS) – A gas main break sent flames shooting into the air in Shrewsbury on Friday.

NStar says a construction crew working on Route 290 accidentally hit the main with a backhoe.

Gas crews managed to get the line shut off, and firefighters stepped in and extinguished the flames.

The backhoe was damaged, but no one was hurt. One-hundred-forty customers were affected.

The gas was expected to be turned back on at some point Friday night.
