Date Set For Special Election Of Mass. Senate Seat
BOSTON (AP) — A date has been set for a special election to fill the state Senate seat formerly held by Democrat Katherine Clark, who has stepped down after winning a special election to Congress.
Massachusetts Secretary William Galvin said the special election will take place April 1 for the 5th Middlesex State Senate District.
The primary will be held March 4. The deadline for submitting nomination papers is Jan. 21. Nominations for the state Senate require a minimum of at least 300 certified signatures.
One candidate, Democratic state Rep. Jason Lewis from Winchester, jumped into the race Thursday.
The 5th Middlesex District consists of Malden, Melrose, Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield, and four precincts in Winchester.
Clark won the 5th Congressional District seat formerly held by Edward Markey after defeating three opponents in Tuesday's special election.
