Attleboro Students Remember Sandy Hook Victims Through 26 Acts Of Kindness

ATTLEBORO (CBS) -- The students at Attleboro High have a challenge for anyone willing: Perform 26 acts of kindness this holiday season.

It's all in an effort to honor the memory of the 26 educators and students killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting last year.

AHS' participation in this initiative was spurred by AHS teachers Kelly Reed and Becky Richard.

Reed grew up near Newtown, Connecticut, and has a friend who teaches at Sandy Hook.

"Unlike with a natural disaster where we could raise money or donate supplies, money can't fix what happened that day. But what we can do is make a commitment to live our lives with more compassion and understanding," Reed said. "We live in scary times. But I think it is important to remind ourselves and the students that while there is indeed great evil in the world, it pales in comparison to the enormous goodness that surrounds us on a daily basis."

The school is hoping their message goes viral. Anyone can participate by going to the school's acts of kindness website.

So far, the students have seen positive results.

Principal Bill Runey said as of Friday, the website has received 1,500 hits and nearly 100 sign ups.

Charitable acts such as donating to Toys For Tots and collecting food for a shelter are mixed with antidotes of a student turning in a lost iPhone and helping an elderly woman load her wheelchair into the car. Many are documented on Twitter through the hashtag #26ActsAHS.

A school-wide act of kindness is being planned for Friday.
