Lawrence Man Pleads Guilty In Baby's 2011 Death

LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) — A 26-year-old Lawrence man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his 3-month-old son almost two years ago.

Alexis Medina was sentenced Tuesday in Lawrence Superior Court to life in prison with the possibility of parole. He also was sentenced to a concurrent 10 to 11 years for assault and battery on a child. He will be eligible for parole in 15 years.

The Essex County district attorney's office said Medina suffocated his son, also named Alexis Medina, in his crib. Prosecutors said Medina turned the baby face down and pushed on his back to stop him from crying.

After the baby's grandmother found him motionless, the child was airlifted to a Boston hospital where he died the next day. Doctors found several broken bones, including 11 broken ribs.
