BOSTON (CBS) – One of the topics Mike Felger and Tony Massarotti kicked off the show with on Tuesday was the release of veteran safety Ed Reed by the Houston Texans.

Sidelined by a hip injury to start the season, the future Hall of Famer has played in just seven games in 2013, starting five of them. And with injured Patriots safety Steve Gregory slated to miss a few weeks with a broken thumb, will Belichick take a look at Reed?

Former NFL tight end and East Boston native Jermaine Wiggins was an in-studio guest Tuesday on the Felger & Massarotti program, and he offered his thoughts on the 9-time Pro Bowler.

“I would take him, he would add depth obviously with Steve Gregory out with a broken thumb,” said Wiggy, who added, “It depends on the salary.”

Now that Ed Reed has been released, all 31 teams have a chance to claim him off waivers in the next 24 hours. If multiple teams place a waiver claim on Reed, the player is awarded to the team with the worst record. If Reed goes unclaimed, he clears waivers and is a free agent.

The team that signs Reed would owe him $411,000 according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

A lot would have to go right for the Patriots to even get a shot at Reed, but it was still a hot topic of conversation today on the show even though it’s unlikely.

Tony Massarotti put it simply on whether or not he would want Ed Reed.

“Two words: hell yes.”

Now, there’s a marked difference between whether they should sign him, and whether they will sign him. Both Felger & Mazz agreed that the Patriots should sign Reed, but doubt they will sign Reed for a number of reasons.

Felger referenced a Yahoo! Sports article by Mike Silver where it was reported that Ed Reed and Bernard Pollard frequently complained to Ravens coach John Harbaugh about practice. Felger wonders if Belichick would want that sort of headache this late in the season.
