Bicyclist Killed In Hit And Run In Middleboro

MIDDLEBORO (CBS) - Police in Middleboro are searching for the driver who struck and killed a bicyclist on Wood Street and then took off at about seven o'clock Friday night.

Police could be seen in the street picking through the debris left behind, including groceries strewn on the road that the bicyclist was carrying. Police say they're hoping witnesses can give them a better description of the vehicle that they only know has "severe front end damage" after leaving the victim on the side of the road.

Asked if the driver should have known something or someone was hit, Lt. David Mackiewicz with Middleboro Police said, "Draw your own conclusions."

He said the road is often used as a cut-through to Route 44 and drivers often speed above the 40 mile per hour limit.

State Police reconstruction teams were working into the night as the Medical Examiner arrived. Police say they won't release the identity of the victim until family members are notified.
