Red Sox Announce They'll Wear Red Alternate Jerseys For Playoff Opener

BOSTON (CBS) -- It's been a while since we've seen the Red Sox in action, and when they do re-emerge Friday afternoon at Fenway Park, they won't be in their classic look.

The Red Sox announced that they'll be wearing their red jerseys when they take the field Friday afternoon.

It's noteworthy because the Red Sox are one of the oldest teams in baseball, playing in the sport's oldest ballpark, but they'll be wearing relatively new jerseys. The team typically wears the red alternate jerseys on Friday nights.

The Red Sox invited fans attending the game to also wear red, which is obviously a much more common occurrence in the stands at Fenway Park and was likely to happen whether there was an invite or not.

Jon Lester will start for the Red Sox against the Rays, with first pitch coming Friday shortly after 3 p.m.
