Van Slams Into Jeep On Route 24, Brockton Woman Killed

AVON (CBS) – A woman was killed in a collision on Route 24 early Friday morning.

State police said they received a call for a car stopped in a northbound lane just after midnight.

But when they arrived at the scene, the Jeep Liberty had been hit from behind by a Dodge Caravan.

Investigators say the Caravan was travelling in the middle lane when it came upon the Jeep, which was stopped just ahead in the same lane with its lights off.

The Caravan driver, 25-year-old Robert Stockwell of Middleborough, tried to avoid the Jeep but slammed into the back of it, spinning it around.

The Caravan ran off the road into the median and hit a guardrail.

The Jeep driver, Marielourdes Azard-Torchon, 39, of Brockton, was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital, where she died.

Stockwell was taken to Boston Medical Center with what authorities described as "non- life threatening injuries."

No charges have been filed at this point in the investigation.
