OCEARCH Tags First Shark Of Summer Off Cape Cod

BOSTON (CBS) – Great white shark taggers off Chatham are celebrating their first “catch” of the summer.

The 12 and a half foot, 1,400 pound female named Betsy was pulled up on to their research boat Thursday afternoon.

The crew from OCEARCH saw three sharks, but only one took the bait.

Once the shark is up on the deck, the team quickly tags the shark and takes samples before releasing it. They are trying to learn about shark breeding and migration.

Last year, the OCEARCH team tagged two sharks. The team has seen 10 sharks off the Cape Cod coast this summer but so far only one has taken the bait.
