Police ID Man Fatally Shot By Trooper In Chicopee
CHICOPEE, Mass. (AP) — State police say the man fatally shot by a trooper during a traffic stop in Chicopee has been identified as 23-year-old Wayne Edwards II.
The trooper noticed the car speeding on Interstate 91 south at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday.
Police say Edwards became combative after the trooper asked for his license and registration and got into "physical altercation" with the trooper. The officer then fired his weapon, striking the man, who drove away before striking a barrier. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police said they found two guns in Edwards' car. Both had obliterated serial numbers.
Police did not release the name of the trooper who shot Edwards or the name of his 22 year-old female passenger, who was not hurt.
