Suspect In Stephen Rakes Killing Held Without Bail

BOSTON (AP) — A Sudbury man is spending his first weekend in jail after pleading not guilty to attempted murder in the death of a man with connections to the James "Whitey" Bulger trial who authorities say drank poisoned iced coffee.

William Camuti is being held without bail until a hearing is held Tuesday to determine whether he is a danger to the community.

Prosecutors say the 69-year-old Camuti owed money to the victim, Stephen Rakes, and acted alone.

Rakes' body was found in the woods in suburban Boston on July 17, the day after he learned he would not be called to testify at the Bulger trial.

Prosecutors say Rakes and his former wife were forced to sell their South Boston liquor store in 1984 to Bulger for use as a headquarters for his gang.
