Effort Organized To Honor Women Veterans In Middleboro

MIDDLEBORO (CBS) -- A local veterans group is seeking to honor women who served in the U.S. military.

The group, Middleboro Committee for a Women's Veterans Memorial, is seeking to raise $5,000 to install a marker in Middleboro Veterans Memorial Park.

Vietnam War veterans Michelle Hamilton and Mary Standish, both of Middleboro, are helping to organize the effort. They say a memorial to U.S. women who have served their country is long overdue.

"Women have always fought with men. Women have always served with men. But there's never been a particular memorial to women veterans," Hamilton told WBZ NewsRadio on Saturday. "That's what we want."

Standish said a memorial to women veterans could raise awareness about women's service in the U.S. military since the founding of the country.

"People don't realize that women have served from the Revolutionary War to now," she said.
