Middleboro Wary Of Cape Cod Train

MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The revival of summer weekend passenger rail service from Boston to Cape Cod has been a success by most accounts, but Middleboro officials complain the state has not fully addressed safety concerns.

Selectmen say rail crossings are inadequate and there's a lack of fencing near the tracks. The CapeFLYER rolls through town at 60 mph on its way to and from Hyannis.

Town officials say they have yet to receive a full risk assessment from the state.

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said such a formal assessment isn't required because the trains operate on active railroad tracks. He added that state officials addressed safety concerns prior to starting the service, including the placement of advance warning signs near rail crossings.

The CapeFLYER is the first regular passenger rail service to the Cape in 25 years.
