American Flag Falls On Car, Causes Crash On Zakim Bridge
BOSTON (CBS) – A frayed rope is being blamed after an American flag fell from the Zakim Bridge in Boston and caused a minor crash on I-93 on Friday.
State Police say the large American flag that flies over the bridge on patriotic occasions like Independence day became dislodged and fell onto a vehicle in the southbound lane around 10:30 a.m.
The car, a 2010 Toyota Camry being driven by a 55-year-old woman, spun out and crashed into the median.
Officials say there is some minor damage to the car’s bumper.
The driver was not injured.
There were some traffic back-ups as the flag and car were removed from the bridge.
The flag was scheduled to come down this coming on Tuesday night during a scheduled lane closure on the bridge.
A new flag has been ordered. The state says it will be looking for a new type of rope or mounting to make sure there are no similar incidents in the future.
