Pittsburgh Bar Banning Sales Of Sam Adams Beer During Bruins-Penguins Series

By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) — The fine folks of Pittsburgh may enjoy our famous beer, but it’s going to be a little bit more difficult to find in the Steel City in the coming weeks.

As noted by Yahoo’s Puck Daddy blog on Thursday morning, Howler’s Coyote Cafe in Pittsburgh will stop serving Sam Adams Boston Lager on Saturday, the day of Game 1 between the Penguins and Bruins in the Eastern Conference finals.

“Two days left to order Sam Adams,” a sign in the bar says. “We will not be serving any Boston beers during the Eastern Conf. finals!”

From a Boston perspective, it’s game on. But what Pittsburgh-based product can be banned for two weeks without ruining our lives? Heinz ketchup is out of the equation, because life without ketchup is life not worth living. We could ban ourselves from watching Pittsburgh Pirates game, but that would only involve about one or two people in Boston who watch Pittsburgh Pirates games.

Pittsburgh is famous for creating the Clark Bar, but 5 seconds of research shows it is now manufactured by NECCO, which is based in Massachusetts, so that’s out.

We could ban seeing actual penguins at the New England Aquarium on the Boston Harbor, but we don’t want to hurt local businesses here. Plus, hockey rooting interests aside, penguins are awesome. They slide on their bellies, people.

We could ban Yuengling beer (it’s from Pottsville, Pa., but it is wildly popular in PIttsburgh), but, well, we already don’t have that here in Boston. Looks like Boston was just way ahead of the curve on this whole beer-banning thing, eh?
