Markey Leads Gomez By 4 Points In New Senate Race Poll

BOSTON (CBS) – Rep. Ed Markey has a slim lead over Gabriel Gomez in a new poll in the U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts.

The survey from Public Policy Polling released Friday shows Markey leading 44-percent to 40.

The margin of error for the survey is +/-2.5 percent.

However, Gomez, a Republican, has a 16-point lead among independents, leading the Democratic congressman, 47-to-31.

β€œTo put Gomez’s 16 point lead with independents in context though, our final poll in the 2010 special election found Scott Brown winning them by a 64/32 margin. So he still has a long way to go to replicate the formula that let Brown pull off that upset,” researchers said in a statement released with the poll results.

The poll found Gomez has a favorability rating of 41-percent while 27-percent have an unfavorable opinion of him.

Voters are more divided on Markey, with 44-percent holding a positive view of him to 41-percent with a negative one.
