50 Bottle Bombs Discovered On Streets Of Lawrence

LAWRENCE (CBS) – About 50 chemical bottle bombs have been discovered on the streets of Lawrence over the past few weeks, many of which were already exploded.

Officials in that city say it's a dangerous situation, and they are warning residents to be careful.

Fire Capt. Robert Wilson told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Karen Twomey that chemicals are packed into soda bottles, and they explode when mixed.

That explosion is powerful enough to possibly cause serious burns, blindness, and even the loss of fingers or a hand.

"It creates a vapor cloud. Whatever is in there spreads. The danger involved is great," Capt. Wilson said. "The worst-case scenario is they put one of these on the street, or on the sidewalk or next to a car; it doesn't explode; they walk away. A little kid comes along kicks it (or) picks it up, and now you have the explosion."

Officials also say they have rarely seen these types of bombs in the past in Lawrence.
"We actually haven't seen much of this at all. This is new," Capt. Wilson said.
