Salem Man Charged With Attempted Murder Of 2-Year-Old Child

SALEM (CBS) - A Salem man accused of severely beating a 2-year-old is being held without bail.

Juan Javier Claudio, 28, was arrested on a number of charges including attempted murder over the alleged incident that happened sometime around March 12.

Police say the victim's mother took her to the hospital after finding bruises on her face, ears, back, leg, belly, bottom of the foot and neck.

Investigators say the child had been in the care of Claudio and his girlfriend when the attack happened.

Doctors told police it appears the toddler had been severely choked and also suffered significant blunt trauma to her belly.

Along with attempted murder and child abuse charges, Claudio is also charged with domestic assault on his girlfriend, who is pregnant.
