West Bridgewater Police Stop 51 Drivers In 4 Hours During Texting While Driving Sting

WEST BRIDGEWATER (CBS) - Police are sending a message to drivers and they won't be sending it via text message.

In fact, that was the whole point of a weekend sting operation targeting drivers who text.

West Bridgewater Police are right off of Route 106 and it's this road that has seen a lot of accidents over the past few months.

Police decided to set up a four hour sting on Saturday, going after drivers who text and drive. They pulled over 51 drivers texting behind the wheel. Police say they saw a lot more drivers texting, but couldn't pull them all over because of a lack of manpower.

Lieutenant Victor Flaherty said he heard all sorts of excuses.

"'I wasn't texting, I was on Facebook, I was on the internet,'" Flaherty said. "There are no excuses."

Flaherty says he plans to do the sting once a month.
