BOSTON (CBS) — The Boston Celtics are getting a big man for the holidays.
The team signed Jarvis Varnado of the Sioux Falls SkyForce of the NBA’s Developmental League. Varnado, 24, was drafted by Miami 41st overall in 2010 but has never played in an NBA game.
The 6-foot-9 forward set the all-time NCAA record for career blocks with 564 during his four seasons at Mississippi State. He blocked exactly 170 shots in both his junior and senior seasons, which were the sixth-most in a single season.
In the D-League, Varando averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds and 3.9 blocks per game. He leads the league with 39 blocks in 10 games, eight more than any other player.
The Celtics currently rank 27th in the NBA with four blocks per game.
