The Wonderland race track in Revere.
REVERE (CBS) – Mayor Dan Rizzo wants to bring the New England Revolution to Revere.
Rizzo’s office says the city is hoping to buy the closed Wonderland dog racing track and convert the site to a professional soccer stadium.
The Revolution are owned by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and currently play their home games at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.
Rizzo says the purchase would be made with the city’s mitigation payments from Suffolk Downs, which wants to build a $1 billion casino at the horse track.
The owners of Suffolk Downs also control the 34-acre-parcel of land, assessed at $10.8 million.
Revolution president Brian Bilello tells The Boston Globe the team has been talking with Rizzo about building at Wonderland, but calls talks “preliminary.”
Suffolk Downs is the only applicant to date for the sole casino resort license in greater Boston.
