Just before 7 p.m., a car reportedly struck a hydrant and flipped over at the corner of Vernon and Upsala streets.
Water began shooting nearly 40 feet into the air, and it took more than two hours for the water department to shut the hydrant down.
The driver was unconscious when he was pulled to the car and taken to the hospital.
