Patriots Sign Tight End Kellen Winslow Jr.

BOSTON (CBS) — It didn’t take long for the Patriots to go to their backup plan in the wake of Aaron Hernandez’s injury.

The Patriots have agreed to a one-year contract with free agent tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. Denise White of EAG Sports Management tweeted confirmation of the signing on Tuesday morning.’s James Walker first reported the news.

Winslow, 29, was released by the Seahawks during training camp, and he visited with the Patriots for a workout in the preseason.

With Hernandez expected to miss at the very least a few weeks, Winslow should be able to serve as a respectable fill-in. Last year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he caught 75 passes for 763 yards and two touchdowns. In the past three seasons with Tampa, he averaged 73 receptions, 792 yards and four touchdowns.

The NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi said Tuesday morning that Winslow’s health is a serious concern.

“Winslow going to NE today, his knee is a huge concern in terms of practice playing in game,” Lombardi tweeted. “His bad knee is the reason he is not in league.”
