FOXBORO (CBS) — It’s day two of Patriots training camp and let’s focus on the tight ends.
This is what we know. Rob Gronkowski is a beast. He was the best tight end in the league last year and he has the potential to keep improving. He’s got great hands, he’s hard to cover and he’s built strong. But will this offseason cut into his development?
Gronk will be the primary focus of defenses down the line. He’ll have to adjust to how they are going to be covering him to still be the beast.
Aaron Hernandez may be the most versatile tight end in the game. He can line up anywhere and be a factor for the Pats offense. Each year he’s improved and after the first day of training camp, it was clear that Aaron worked hard in the offseason. He’s stronger now and still has that great speed. He could be playing to impress for a contract which means he could have a very big year.
Then there’s Visanthe Shiancoe. Coach Bill Belichick was real positive when talking about the veteran tight end. He mentioned that Shiancoe’s played in two different systems and thrived in both New York and Minnesota, even with several different quarterbacks. He expects him to do the same for the Patriots. His hands are good but his blocking needs tol improve.
These three guys give the Pats a very strong tight end core.
