BOSTON (CBS) – The Celtics are set to sign free agent center Jason Collins, according to ESPNBoston.com.
Collins, 33, gives the Celtics more size up front after center Greg Steimsma signed an offer sheet with the Minnesota Timberwolves that the C’s likely cannot match.
Collins, a 7-footer, spent last season with the Hawks, averaging just 10.3 minutes over 30 games.
In the 2012 first-round playoff series against the Celtics, Collins played the first four games and averaged 3.0 points and 4.0 rebounds.
Not known for his offensive skills, Collins gives the Celtics a solid defensive presence on the front line the team so desperately needed last season.
The Celtics will pay Collins $854,389, while the NBA picks up the rest of his $1.35 veteran minimum salary because he is a league veteran of more than 10 years.
