AYER (CBS) – Homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed by a 5-alarm fire in Ayer on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters believe the flames started in a basement-level pub that was under renovations on Main Street. The Sidetrack Pub was set to open in a week.

The fire then worked its way up to a Subway restaurant on the first floor and at least four apartments on the second and third floors.

Everyone made it out safely and firefighters were able to get the flames under control later in the morning.

A large portion of Main Street was closed for part of the morning commute.

The road was fully reopened before 9 a.m.
