Darnell McDonald Placed On DL, Mauro Gomez Called Up
BOSTON (CBS) - The Red Sox placed outfielder Darnell McDonald on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a right oblique strain.
In his place, the Red Sox called up first baseman Mauro Gomez. To make room for Gomez on the 40-man roster, the Sox moved outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury to the 60-day disabled list (right shoulder subluxation).
McDonald, 33, is hitting .179 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI in 26 games.
He also pitched for the team in their 17-inning affair with the Orioles last Sunday, taking the loss after he allowed a three-run home run to OF Adam Jones.
Gomez, meanwhile, is up in the big leagues for the first time. The 27-year-old was playing well at Triple-A Pawtucket, hitting .294 with 10 home runs and 33 RBI.
