SWAMPSCOTT (CBS) – Officials in Swampscott are trying to figure out who hacked into the Town Hall phone system.
Over the weekend of January 28th and 29th, someone racked up $20,000 in long distance calls to the United Kingdom and to the Philippines.
Swampscott Town Accountant Dave Castellarin says the normal bill is only about $1,300 a month.
WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Karen Twomey reports
The hacker remotely accessed three accounts, and then made more than 50 calls.
Castellarin says, “I guess what they do is they call into companies, and they get the voice-mail, and they kind of just play around with the voice-mail to try and get codes.”
Verizon is pursuing the hackers.
