Postal Workers Say Closing Boston-Area Facilities Will Be Devastating

BOSTON (CBS) – Postal workers and community leaders say plans to close hundreds of facilities around the country will have a devastating impact on local communities.

A mail sorting facility in Waltham and 22 Boston area Post Offices are among those slated to close.

At the State House Wednesday, opponents argued that those closings are bad news for people who rely on the mail.

Paul Kilduff of the American Postal Workers Union says, “Closing the mail processing plants and Post Offices means residents and businesses may not receive bills, payments, prescriptions, on-line purchases and community newspapers on time.”

Hundreds of local postal workers will also lose their jobs. The cuts could begin in mid-May.

The post office is dying faster than Obamas chance of getting re elected.Cry all you want dinosaurs, your jobs are toast. Thank a Democrat.

No Thank a republican. They are the ones that mandate that the postal service pay 5.5 billion dollars a year to prefund retiree health benefits for 75 years ahead and they could change that with a vote to eliminate the mandate. Imagine any other company in the United States being required to do so. It would devastate this country and it would be something no one would survive it. IF not for this mandate the post office would be making a profit.

      1. Rob Cleary says:

Jeez, can you imagine that!! A policy that requires fiscal responsibility.

      2. Elaine says:

Really? That is fiscal responsibility. Consider this: This mandate is not imposed on any other business(government or otherwise) and it prefunds health benefits 75 years ahead. Therefore they are paying benefits to employees that are not even born yet. And that money that has been paid is GONE!!! The fedral government now owes billions of dollars to the postal service. And if it were fiscally responsible, it wouldn’t be the main cause for the postal service financial problems. The postal service actually makes a profit, if not for this mandate. It is unnecessary and irresponsible.

So is Mitt your man? Santorum? Newt? These guys have shot themselves in the foot so many times they’re running out of toes. The only votes Romney will get will be from people who know the 2 party system will be in jeopardy based on Obama’s landslide victory. Much like Johnson/Goldwater in “64.
