NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — Police are investigating the apparent killing of a man who was found lying unconscious in the backyard of a New Bedford home.

Authorities say they believe 33-year-old Melvin Pina of New Bedford was killed early Saturday morning.

Residents of the Bates Street home called police shortly after 7:30 a.m. saying an unresponsive man was lying in their backyard.

Police and paramedics responding to the scene discovered that the victim was already dead.

A spokesman for Bristol County District Attorney Samuel Sutter says the state medical will conduct an autopsy that will determine the manner and cause of death.

Authorities say anyone with information on the case and Pina’s whereabouts on Friday night and Saturday morning should contact New Bedford police or submit anonymous tips by text messages or at www.tipsubmit.com.
