Crawford Sets No Timetable For Return, Says Desire To Get Back Faster Caused Setback

FORT MYERS, Fla. (CBS) -- Carl Crawford spoke to reporters on Tuesday morning about the setback in his recovery from wrist surgery, and he admitted he may have pushed himself too hard to get back on the field as soon as possible.

"I don't think it was the program," Crawford said. "I think it was me pushing myself a little bit more, just to see. Stuff like this happens. You can't predict this kind of stuff."

Crawford, 30, said that the idea of getting healthy in time for Opening Day was his goal, but he knew he'd need to get at-bats in spring training in order for that to be a reality. With the most recent inflammation in his wrist, he's learned that simply resting is all he can do now.

"I'm pretty sure just waiting and making sure it's fine," Crawford said. "I'm pretty much worried about my timing and I wanted to get that part in but at the end of the day it's probably best just to wait for it to heal correctly. That way, I can be strong and I don't have to worry about it happening again."

"He's trying to get as much work in as he can," Bobby Valentine said. "He's trying to get his mind and timing and body in as good a shape as it can be."

Crawford said he doesn't have a timetable for returning, but for this week, he won't be throwing or hitting.

Despite the setback, Crawford's keeping a forward-thinking mentality.

"I ain't disappointed at all," he said. "It's something I can't control. I just have to wait till it gets ready. My body feels strong, my hand actually feels strong, I just have to wait for that soreness to go away.
