Saugus Residents Blame Farm For Seagull Invasion

SAUGUS (CBS) – The roofs of some of the $1 million homes in a secluded hilltop neighborhood of Saugus are now streaked with the white, anatomical art of seagulls.

And there’s a smell.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Carl Stevens reports

WBZ-TV’s Bill Shields reports

Residents of Gianna Drive and Bria Circle say they’ve been invaded by the birds, and they blame Rocky Hill Farm, a compost farm which is just down the street.

“Depending on how the wind blows, the odor from the farm is terrible. Now we’re having a problem with seagulls,” resident Frank Cambria told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Monday.

“We have deer, we have turkeys, we have coyotes, we have every animal that you can think of. But that’s natural. This farm is bringing the seagulls to us. That is not natural.”

“It’s a health issue, ” says Cambria, who built his home on Gianna Drive ten years ago. “At first, there were no gulls, then the farm nearby started a composting business, and now our homes are covered with droppings.”

Farm owners Francis and Marianne Buzun told the Lynn Daily Item the seagulls are coming because of the restaurants along Route 1, not their farm. WBZ went to the Rocky Hill Farm, but were told to leave the property.

Frank isn’t the only homeowner complaining. Bob Restaino finds clam shells and chicken bones on his roof, and in the yard.

The town’s Health Commissioner, while acknowledging the homeowners have a problem, says the source of the seagulls’ food is not the farm. “I’ve been to the farm on numerous occasions, and haven’t seen a seagull on the ground, ” says Frank Giacolone. “I really believe the source of the food is all the restaurants on Route 1.”

The issue will come before the Saugus Health Board next Monday.

White wash on Million dollar homes roofs
that should cut down on the absorbed radiation of the sun and reflect heat thereby aiding in cooling the planet.

Parking lots and fast food is what attracts gulls and…. get ready HUMANS and their inability of controlling their own waste and acts…dumping uneaten food and tossing it out of car windows and parking lots…

The landfills of the sixties and seventies are the new developments of McDonald’s, taco bell and Walmarts
as well as body’s of water in the area.. Take out a hill for million dollar homes O’ well…

    Farms at faults… yeah right

    • Tsal

Every house by the ocean has a colony of gulls on its roofs. Agree cat fight

  • P

    • 1stackmack

  • smash44

Ah poor, poor little snot-hole rich people.

  • sean

  • Rob Cleary

The Obama entitled. Is there no end?

    • Mom

Seems more like the Romney entitled would live in $1,000,000+ homes.
Why is everything Obama’s fault to you?

    • Tsal

You a litle confused since its the right promoting wealth?

      • Ratt

Yes, the right promotes wealth, and the left promotes taking it to redistribute it for Democrat votes.

  • emom

Since when do seagulls eat fertilizer,,, YEAH RIGHT<, just a bunch of rich folk whining that their multi million dollar homes are being invaded by nature,, YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE BUILT THEM THEN….. Where ever there is food seagulls will follow… Look at fishing boats out in the middle of the ocean and then there are hundreds of seagulls, They are not there because of the veiw,,,,, its the fish,,,,,, We have created a breed of lazy birds,,, from the years of feeding them..;.. you get what you create,,,,, dont blame a farm , blame the food induistry.. Hey dont look ,,,,, but I think I saw One of those birds pretending to be a seagull, I think most of them are crows deswuised as seagulls, THE BIRDS REVOLT AGAINST THE RICH…..

  • Smarter than the Average Bear

not that the proximity to the shore has anything to do with….ya think? Gulls don’t want compost…they want what compost was BEFORE it composted….the garbage along Rte 1~!!!!!!

  • Allym

The Farm has been there for years, sorry they didn’t do their due diligence when they purchased/built the home. Sea Gulls are part of “nature” in coastal communities, Saugus is not that far from the ocean. They should accept it or move.

    • ginny2

I agree with you. I was going to ask how long the farm has been there versus when these homes were built. If you move into an area and build, then you should be looking at every factor around you before you sign on the dotted line and drop your money on the table. Leave the farm alone if they were there before the homes.

      • Cat fight

This happens everywhere a new development is put in. people harass established farms when these “people” move into to these castles.. they move next to farms a cry over the smell. If its not sea gulls . its coyote, if its not crows , its something else…
You know with entitle rich babies like this is when you find dead birds .. then the news covers the story’s of ” mysterious” die off’s,, only to find out later someone was using avicides… When it come to man and wildlife ..wildlife will always lose.

      • Nab71

Its pretty clear that the complaint about the seagulls is a ruse to shut down the compost farm that predated the homes.

  • Peg

I didn’t know seagulls were such good judges of character…..

  • blackbear1

City slickers!! Wait until Summer season arrives and brings in bees, hornets,etc.. These people are going to be hysterical…

  • Rob Cleary

They don’t have this problem in Lynn. The illegals eat them.

  • jack

We have the same problem. Since when is running a garbage dump called a “farm”?

    • Elaine

I agree. We’ve called the board of health in saugus and were told by Frank that the (biological waste) “farm” gets deliveries of rotten food from supermarkets each week and that is what causes the stench. My kids can’t even play outside in the yard when the wind is blowing in our direction. And we don’t have a million dollar home…we live in a small cape.

  • 1stackmack

l love the line.we have deer, coyotes and turkeys.and all natural setting, these seagulls aren’t natural.what are they if there not natural.manmade or perhaps radio controlled roof painters.leave the farm alone.lts like people who buy a house next to a highway and complain about the noise.sell the million dollar house near the ocean and buy a million dollar house in the country and complain about the crows instead.feed them alci wouldn’t have seagulls crap on your’ll have exploded seagulls though.everywhere.
