BOSTON (CBS) – The New England Patriots will likely place the franchise tag on receiver Wes Welker, according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The team and Welker’s agent have been talking about a new deal for the Pro Bowl receiver, but if the sides cannot agree on an extension, New England plans to use the franchise tag says Schefter, according to a league source.
With the franchise tag, Welker would receiver a one-year, $9.5 million deal.
The 30-year-old Welker led the Patriots and NFL with 122 receptions in 2012. His 554 receptions since joining the Patriots in 2007 also lead the NFL in that span.
