Belichick Not Thinking About Retirement

INDIANAPOLIS (CBS) - If Patriots head coach Bill Belichick were to retire today, he'd be guaranteed enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Yet, with the chance on Sunday to become just the second coach ever to win four Super Bowls, retirement appears to be the farthest thing from the 59-year-old Belichick's mind.

"Right now, I'm really thinking about what's the best thing I can do to help our football team on Sunday against the Giants," Belichick said when asked if a win on Sunday would make him want to ride off into the sunset, so to speak. "I want to really try to do a good job in the job that I have. I enjoy all the aspects of the job."

Currently, Belichick ranks sixth all time among head coaches with a win-loss record that's 78 games above .500. In the postseason, his .714 winning percentage is seventh-best in history, and his 15 playoff victories rank fifth all-time, behind Hall of Famers Tom Landry, Don Shula, Joe Gibbs and Chuck Noll. Belichick is currently tied with Gibbs and Bill Walsh with three Super Bowl victories, behind only Noll's four.

Despite all of the historical implications of Sunday's Super Bowl, and despite a 60th birthday party in a few months, Belichick doesn't seem worried about much of anything this week.

"I slept like a baby," he said of his nights this week.

The coach expanded on what it is that he enjoys about his job, from drafting to signing free agents to working with young players to working with 10-year veterans.

"I enjoy the competition on a weekly basis, not just on Sundays but in the preparation leading up into the game. I enjoy all of it," Belichick said. "It beats working."
