Biggest Snowfall Of Winter Coming Saturday

BOSTON (CBS) - It's beginning to look a lot like winter - finally!

And the biggest snowfall of the season for many in eastern Massachusetts is on the way Saturday. The good news is that this will be a straight snow event. No coastal flooding issues, not much wind, no ice or mixing, just a nice, light and fluffy snow event.

TIMELINE:

The first flakes will be in western Massachusetts around 5-to-6 a.m., in Worcester County right around dawn 7 a.m. and into Boston by 8-to-9 a.m.

The snow will continue steadily for about 6 hours or so before tapering from west to east between 3-to-5 p.m.

AMOUNTS:

Since the storm track is fairly far to our south, the highest snow totals will be in southeastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Those areas will be in line for a solid 4-to-6 inches of snow.

The snow will be a bit wetter and heavier along the South Coast and Cape, but should still manage to accumulate at least 3 or 4 inches.

Farther north from the Mass Pike to Boston and northward 2-to-4 inches of light and fluffy snow is expected.

There will be a cutoff north of Manchester, New Hampshire, due to less available moisture, only an inch or two is expected.

FOLLOWING THE STORM:

Skies will clear somewhat Saturday night allowing temperatures to drop into the teens and even single digits in far northern and western suburbs.  Winds will be light behind the storm.

FOR THE BIG GAME:

On Sunday at Gillette Stadium, skies will become mainly cloudy due to an onshore, easterly wind at 5-to- 10 mph, and there could even be a few flurries in the air, but no accumulation is expected.

Temperatures will remain cold, topping out in the low 30's at best.

That new snowpack will trap in a lot of the cold air and not allow much daytime heating.

TEMPERATURES NEXT WEEK:

They will be on the rise, well into the 40's on Monday and Tuesday, with some rain on the way on Monday.
