Piles Of Trash Dumped Under The Guise Of Donations In Oxford

OXFORD (CBS) – Wednesday was a busy, backbreaking day for Mike Sweeney, but he's got better things he could be doing, like running his charity, Mint Green Planet, which takes donations of clothing and shoes.

Instead, he's cleaning junk out of a vacant lot along Route 20 in Oxford.

"A little more than clothes and shoes," says Sweeney. "I didn't think it was this bad."

WBZ-TV's Jim Smith reports

A pair of boxes is set up to receive donated books and clothing, but good luck getting to them. First you have to pick your way through old broken TVs, broken glass, about a dozen couches and just about anything else.

Sweeney says he's had enough.

"They dump it under the guise of donating," says Sweeney. "This is just absolutely ridiculous."

Sweeney says he has about 250 donation boxes throughout the area and he says dumping is an occasional problem, but he's never seen a problem like this.

People at nearby businesses are also frustrated.

"People just dumping off everything, anything and everything," says Nicholas Michalak. "I've called the police and gotten no response.

Mike Sweeney just wants some help from somewhere. "It's just very difficult to comprehend why someone would do that," he says.
