The Janes family was fast asleep in their Bard Street home when their dog started barking frantically at around 4 a.m. Tuesday, waking the family of five from a sound sleep.

"Apparently, the dog heard some noises and alerted the family that was sleeping, woke up the mother of the two children, and then alerted her to something going on in her house, which then she saw the fire and then got her children out of the house" said Deputy Chief William Laliberty of the Haverhill Fire Department. "So, the dog was actually a key in getting her a quick exit out of the house."

Dep. Chief Laliberty said the house is a total loss and the cause of the fire was accidental.

"They were using a fire pit too close to the house. We have restrictions of 75 feet away from any structure, so I don't think they were using this fire pit in a safe manner," said Dep. Chief Laliberty.

"An ember escaped from the fire pit and onto maybe the wooden deck and caused fire to ignite," said Dep. Chief Laliberty.
