Red Sox Sign Infielder Nick Punto

BOSTON (CBS) -  The Boston Red Sox have signed infielder Nick Punto, according to tweets by CBSSports' Jon Heyman.

Punto and the Sox have reportedly agreed to a two-year deal worth roughly $3.5 million.

The 34-year-old Punto played with the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals last season, batting .278 with a home run and 20 RBI in 63 games.

An 11-year veteran, Punto can play third, short and second base.  A career .249 hitter, he spent seven seasons with the Twins, three with the Phillies and last season with the Cardinals.

Punto will compete with Mike Aviles for the utility infielder's spot on the roster.

Earlier Wednesday, the Sox traded  infielder Jed Lowrie and Kyle Weiland to the Houston Astros for reliever Mark Malancon.
