Report: Ortiz Getting ‘Serious Interest’ From Other Teams

BOSTON (CBS) – David Ortiz is getting some love on the free agent market.

The designated hitter is receiving “serious interest” from more than one team, an industry source told the Boston Herald’s Michael Silverman on Monday.

“He has lots of options,” said the source.

The Red Sox have negotiated with Ortiz, and did offer him arbitration last week. There is no word if Ortiz would accept arbitration, in effect signing a one-year deal for a little more than the $12.5 million he made in 2010.

If Ortiz were to sign elsewhere, Boston would be compensated with the team’s first round draft pick. Ortiz has said he would like to return to Boston, and will give the Red Sox a chance to counter any offer he gets.

A staple with the Sox since 2003, Ortiz hit .309 with 29 home runs and 96 RBI in 2011.

Possible suitors for Ortiz include the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays.

Yes they need to go get him! He is still a great DH and is constant in the locker room. He’s a good vet to have around and his lack of presence would be noticed.

Is a constant in the locker room? Are you talking about our KFC, Bud Light locker room? Yeah, he was real good, showed great leadership. Said he wanted to get away from this soap opera. Did you see him interrupt Tito’s press conerence? I am very unsure of his temperment. Beneath that jovial exterior, what else is there? You would think his presence would be noticed, but I didn’t notice it down that horrible stretch. Jared, I think you have the wrong guy.

Ortiz has been my favorite player for years. However, his recent comment about considering going to the Yankees was insulting to any Red Sox fan.
